NFL Insider Drops Bombshell Report On Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence Contract
Steve Roberts-USA TODAY Sports

When the Jacksonville Jaguars selected quarterback Trevor Lawrence with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, many thought that he would lead them back to contention quickly. Unfortunately, that has not been the case thus far, although the Jaguars have improved with him leading the way.

Instead, the Jaguars have remained a middle of the pack team. They have improved, but not enough to be considered anything close to a Super Bowl contender.

Now, the Jaguars and Lawrence are trying to work out a long-term extension. It seems that something is likely to get done, but there may be differing viewpoints on how much the 24-year-old quarterback is actually worth.

NFL Insider Drops Bombshell Report On Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence Contract

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has made a major report about where things stand between the two sides and how much money Lawrence is looking for on his next deal. He said that Lawrence is looking to make $50 million on his next contract.

“That’s the target point for all these quarterbacks…The way that the salary cap is going and the way that the marketplace has gone, there’s no reason for any of the top quarterbacks who are coming up to think that they shouldn’t be pushing that number.”

For the Jacksonville Jaguars, they don’t have much choice but to pay him that kind of money. Lawrence is their franchise quarterback and they have gone all-in on him. However, he may not be worth that much.

During the 2023 season with the Jaguars, Lawrence ended up completing 65.6 percent of his pass attempts for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He also picked up 339 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Those numbers are solid, but they aren’t elite quarterback production. No one can truly point out why Lawrence should be viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL.

As far as a pure talent perspective, there is no doubt that Lawrence is one of the most talented signal callers in the game. But, he has not been able to prove that he can perform on the field up to those standards. In fact, he has actually proven the opposite throughout his first three NFL seasons.

All of that being said, Lawrence is just 24 years old and still has plenty of time to get things firing on all cylinders. The Jaguars certainly need him to do so. If he can develop to his full potential, Jacksonville would become a sleeper Super Bowl contender with the roster they have put around him.

It will be interesting to see what the 2024 season has in store for Lawrence. Can he finally take the jump to playing like the superstar talent that he possesses? Or will he have another disappointing season?

The Jaguars will also have to make a decision soon about their future with Lawrence and whether they’re willing to fully commit to him or not. A lot is riding on the upcoming season for both parties involved.
