Boston radio host doesn't hold back in his criticism of former Tennessee Vols QB Joe Milton

A Boston sports radio talk show host didn't hold back this week in his criticism of former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton.

Scott Zolak, a former NFL quarterback who spent nine years in the league and is now the co-host of 98.5's Zolak and Bertrand, made it clear that he doesn't have high hopes for Milton in the NFL.

"The problem I had was the combine," said Zolak on Tuesday. "Everybody’s going on about the 80 yard pass. I’ve sent you the drop. He (Milton) takes like a two step drop. Walks to his right. Waits, waits, waits and then fires it. That’s not football. That doesn’t happen. You explode back on a five step drive and give me a hitch, and then you throw the ball 80 yards. He sent these footwork videos from yesterday and Drake Maye’s moving well. Joe Milton is very lazy in his drop."

"The feet are not there. You rip Drake Maye for his footwork? Watch Joe Milton in a warm-up or game. Flat footed. Lazy, drags the foot," added Zolak. "Yeah, he can throw a ball through the wall. What’s it going to do you when you’re on your back? You know, at Tennessee you could get guys that are 6-foot-6/340 lbs. Put them in front of you. You can block it up. You’re gonna block up Kentucky, you’re not going to block up the Jets. You don’t have that time to do what he’s doing against the Jets. That pocket will be closing and they will be bringing pressure up the middle."

Zolak also suggested that Milton was "lallygagging" and had "no sense of urgency" during the Patriots' OTA session on Monday.

Co-host Marc Bertrand added that Milton "doesn’t have great body language" before Zolak noted that he thinks Bailey Zappe makes the team over Milton.

Ouch. That's some sharp criticism for a sixth round selection who has a rookie minicamp and one OTA session under his belt. Milton obviously needs to continue developing as a quarterback -- his foot work and the "touch" on his passes could use some refining. But it's a bit early to know how the Milton experience will turn out in New England.

The Patriots clearly saw some upside in the former Vol which is what led to the selection.

And it seems like a smart gamble. It's not like the Patriots are going to be in a bad situation if they miss on a sixth round pick. And if Milton reaches his potential, the Patriots will look like brilliant for selecting the Florida native late in the draft.
